1. Munich Spring Festival – or Munchener Fruhlingsfest – is an annual celebration of spring known as 'Little Oktoberfest'. For two weeks in April, beer halls, market stalls and carnival rides fill the Oktoberfest venue of Theresienwiese, marking the end of winter in traditional Bavarian style. Massive halls serve up Bavarian food and Augustiner beer, there's a big flea market on the first weekend and fireworks on the closing Friday night. The festival is free, with family discounts on rides and food on Tuesdays. From April 20 to May 6, 2012.

2. Lang Nacht Der Musik – the 'long night of music' is a cross-genre festival featuring everything from jazz to classical to hip-hop. The city-wide event, which happens from 8pm to 3am, allows ticket holders to catch as many concerts of participating bands and artists as they like. A shuttle bus runs for the duration of the event to transport ticket holders around the city to the different venues. On April 28, 2012.

3. Week of Ballet – this annual week of dance is hosted by the Bavarian State Ballet and incorporates classical and contemporary ballet. International guest troupes also feature. From April 22 to 29, 2012.

4. UEFA Champions League Final – This hotly anticipated football final will take place on May 19 in the Allianz Arena, home turf of FC Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich. This match is set to be one of Munich's most exciting events, drawing football fans from across Europe and the world. The transparent outer layer of the high-tech Allianz Arena will be illuminated, while inside, some 70,000 spectators witness the venue's biggest game to date.

5. Circus Krone – Europe's largest circus, the Circus Krone in Munich has seating for 3,000 spectators. The third and final 'winter' program will take place in April, featuring the circus's acrobats, clowns and performing animals, including 15 lions under the care of renowned British animal trainer Martin Lacey, Jnr.
