For fashion lovers, there is simply no place more exciting than Paris during Fashion Week. This year, the womenswear prêt-à-porter SS2013 shows run from Tuesday 25 September to Wednesday 3 October. These 'ready-to-wear' collections set global fashion trends for the coming year, not only in designer boutiques, but in high street stores and market stalls around the world.

The most hotly anticipated shows are staged by the big, iconic French fashion houses: Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy and Dior, to name a few. For the prêt-à-porter Fall/Winter 2012-13 collection held this January past, Chanel transformed the Grand Palais into an icy wonderland, while the Vuitton show converted a tent in the Louvre's Cour Carrée into an antique railway station.

International shows, while less extravagant, are just as influential. Miu Miu, Elie Saab, Kenzo, Stella McCartney, and Vivienne Westwood are some of the bigger names, showing alongside lesser-known designers such as 31-year-old Gareth Pugh and Amaya Arzuaga from Spain.

While many prêt-à-porter shows are open to public ticket-holders, soaking up Parisian style isn't dependent upon show attendance. Due to the influx of fashion professionals and stylistas from around the globe, just walking amongst well-heeled crowds down the Champs-Élysées or browsing boutique stores on Saint Germain are unforgettable fashion experiences in their own right.

Shopping is also an inspirational activity during fashion week in Paris. Luxury labels such as Chloé and Christian Louboutin are must-sees for fashion followers, even if it's just to window-shop. For antiques, vintage wear and bric-a-brac, the shops of the Marais lend themselves to hours of browsing, while Le Bon Marché department store on the Left Bank offers food and fashion under the one roof.
