ตั้งแต่วันที่ 13 – 16 มิถุนายน เหล่านักบิดจากทั่วโลกจะพุ่งตรงไปที่กรุงโรมเพื่อร่วมฉลองวันเกิดครบ 110 ปีของยี่ห้อที่เป็นขวัญใจของใครหลายๆคน คาดการณ์กันว่า งานนี้จะสามารถดึงดูดสิงห์มอเตอร์ไซค์ได้มากกว่า 500,000 คน ในงานจะมีทั้งส่วนของการไปเยี่ยมชม “หมู่บ้านฮาเลย์” ในเมืองท่าอันเก่าแก่อย่างออสเทีย ขบวนพาเหรดมอเตอร์ไซค์ฮาร์เลย์ไปยังใจกลางเมือง การออกร้านและบูธโชว์สินค้าจากทั่วโลก ไม่เว้นแม้กระทั่งพิธีเจิมมอเตอร์ไซค์ที่ลานเซนต์ ปีเตอร์

จากจุดเริ่มต้นเล็กๆในอดีต แบรนด์ฮาร์เลย์ เดวิดสันถือว่าก้าวหน้ามาไกลมาก ในปี 1901 เด็กหนุ่มคนหนึ่งชื่อว่า วิลเลี่ยม ฮาร์เลย์ได้ออกแบบเครื่องยนต์ 116 ซีซีที่เขาจะสามารถประกอบไปกับโครงรถมอเตอร์ไซค์ทั่วไปได้ ด้วยความช่วยเหลือจากเพื่อนและพี่น้อง อาร์เธอร์และวอลเตอร์ เดวิดสัน ที่ช่วยปรับปรุงดีไซน์และก่อตั้งบริษัทในปี 1903 จนในที่สุดรถคันแรกก็ได้เข้าร่วมแข่งขันมอเตอร์ไซค์ที่เมืองมิลวอกี้ ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาในปี 1904 ซึ่งรถคันนี้เข้าเส้นชัยมาเป็นที่ 4 ต่อมาในปี 1906 โรงงานแห่งแรกขนาดประมาณ 22 ตารางเมตรก็ได้ถูกสร้างขึ้น ในเวลานั้นตึกทั้งหลังยังเป็นแค่ไม้เท่านั้น และทุกอย่างก็เริ่มจากที่นั่น ในปี 1920 ฮาร์เลย์ เดวิดสันกลายเป็นผู้ผลิตรถมอเตอร์ไซค์ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก มอเตอร์ไซค์ฮาร์เลย์ชนะการแข่งขันระดับท็อปหลายรายการ หรือแม้กระทั่งเมื่อสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 เริ่มขึ้น ฮาร์เลย์ก็ให้การสนับสนุนมอเตอร์ไซค์กว่า 15,000 คันให้กับกองทัพสหรัฐ

และแน่นอนสิ่งที่จะไม่พูดถึงฮาร์เลย์ เดวิดสันไม่ได้เลยคือการเป็นผู้นำแฟชั่น อย่างเช่น ดาราดัง เดนนิส ฮอปเปอร์ในภาพยนตร์เรื่อง Easy Rider ความหลงใหลในมอเตอร์ไซค์ฮาร์เลย์ของดาราดังขวัญใจคนหัวกบฏอย่างสตีฟ แม็คควีน หรือความสัมพันธ์ของฮาร์เลย์ เดวิดสันกับชมรมมอเตอร์ไซค์ระดับโลกอย่าง Hell’s Angels ที่บางครั้งก็ไม่ใช่ในแง่ดีนัก ทุกวันนี้ ฮาร์เลย์ เดวิดสันกลายเป็นยี่ห้อดังที่แทบไม่มีใครไม่รู้จัก มีผลิตภัณฑ์อีกหลากหลายรูปแบบจนเชื่อว่าแม้แต่ผู้ก่อตั้งเองก็คงคาดไม่ถึง ทั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์ ทัวร์โรงงานผลิต มีหุ้นในตลาดหุ้นใหญ่ๆ อย่างนิวยอร์ค มีแม้กระทั่ง แบรนด์เสื้อผ้าของตัวเอง

From June 13-16, riders and fans from around the world will head to Rome to celebrate the 110th birthday of the iconic brand, an event which expects to draw over half a million people. Plans include a ‘Harley Village’ in the ancient port town of Ostia, a motorcycle parade to the center of the city, exhibits by vendors and customizers from around the world, and even a bike blessing in St. Peter’s Square!

The brand sure has come a long way from its humble beginnings. In 1901 a young man named William Harley designed a 116 cc engine that he could attach to a regular bicycle frame. With help from his friends, brothers Arthur and Walter Davidson, the design was refined and expanded and they officially founded the company in 1903. Their first machine entered a motorcycle race in Milwaukee in 1904, where it placed fourth, and in 1906 they built their first factory – a 240 sq.ft wooden building. Things quickly took off from there. By 1920 Harley-Davidson was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, helped by wins at several high-profile races and the advent of WWI, in which they supplied 15,000 bikes for the US military.

Of course we would be remiss to forget the company’s link to renegade “counter-culture” such as Harley-riding Dennis Hopper in the iconic movie Easy Rider, bad-boy Steve McQueen’s love of the brand, and the company’s connection with the Hell’s Angels, a global motorcycle club with an often notorious reputation. Today, the brand is a household name with a much more diversified presence than its founders could ever have imagined, with a museum, a factory tour, a listing on the New York Stock Exchange, and even a brand of clothing.

It’s fitting then, that Rome is the place where fans of the legendary company can meet to celebrate its 110th anniversary – one of the world’s most iconic brands in one of the world’s most enduring cities. Riding a high tech machine past the Coliseum and down the same streets that Roman armies once marched on is sure to be a thrilling experience.
