BEACH CLEANUP AT THE SIMILAN AND THE SURIN ISLANDSThe Similan and The Surin National Marine Parks in Phang Nga province have once again re-opened to tourists on October 15, 2019. The islands have been closed for the last five months in order to help the area rejuvenate and protect the fragile ecosystem from the detrimental effects of over tourism. These two marine parks are normally open for several months a year from October 15 to May 15, and remain closed throughout the monsoon season. The Phang-Nga Tourism Association joint hands with local business, hotels, and tour operators alike to conduct a “Beach Cleanup” activity at The Similan and The Surin Islands on October 12th and 13th, 2019. The driving force behind this was spreading the message of environmental protection and sustainable development as well as clearing the islands and ocean of debris before the two spectacular National Parks re-open on October 15th. The initiative aimed to achieve greater community awareness about the need to protect and save the ocean, uplift vulnerable marine habitats, and be at the forefront of a pollution free ocean. The event was led by Phang-Nga Tourism Association and volunteer staff members, inclusion many of our very own JW Marriott Khao Lak associates, who actively picked up litter and trash collected along the shoreline. If you want to snorkel during your visit to Khao Lak from now on, then the Similan Islands and Surin Islands are the place go.
